Voyage Of the Damned
In this life, we seldom get to live out our dreams. One of mine came true the other night, a true Christmas miracle, and now God can strike me down, because honestly, what else is there? I've seen Prince live, seen Bon Jovi live, and now I can say I saw Kylie Minogue on Doctor Who.
Too much? Maybe, but I'll tell ya one thing...seeing your favorite performer with your favorite Doctor on your favorite sci-fi show is the coolest thing ever! The Christmas special this year absolutely rocked, and it certainly lived up to not only my expectations, but the usual greatness we've always gotten from the bunch behind Doctor Who.
Spoilers!
The show opened with the usual Doctor Who opening, and when I saw Kylie's name in that famous opening, that was the first time I bawled like a baby. It wouldn't be the last (Look kids! Foreshadowing!). Titled Voyage Of The Damned, the setting was the Titanic, with a bit of a twist. Instead of an ocean liner from the 1920's, it was a space cruiser from another world.
The show was a nice homage to those great 70's disaster flicks, with all the trappings. Claustrophobia, different personalities thrown together, and of course, sacrifice. Russell T. Davies crafted a fantastic script, packed with excitement, emotion, and those great Doctor Who moments that fans of the show absolutely adore.
Kylie was wonderful in the role of Astrid (her and David Tennant had really good chemistry together), with just the right amounts of wide eyed awe, innocence, and charm (with a bit of spunk thrown in for good measure) to endear her to the audience. She has one of those smiles that just glows with friendliness and genuineness, and you like her character from the moment you set eyes on her. And that's the single main reason why you are absolutely devastated when she sacrifices herself to save the Doctor from the bad guy.
A great story, David Tennant (I've said it before, and I'll say it again) who will forever be my Doctor, Kylie Minogue...I'll have to watch it again before I can judge, but I think (KM bias aside) that this is my favorite of the three Christmas specials so far. And as I mentioned last night, 12 million people seem to agree with me.
